Welcome to the Journey!

Welcome to the journey of writing your life stories! It's a delight to think about people of all ages gathering to write and tell their stories as we assemble around the virtual fire.

In her book entitled, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, Anne Lamott says, "One of the gifts of being a writer is that it gives you an excuse to do things, to go places and explore. Another is that writing motivates you to look closely at life, at life as it lurches by and tramps around."

So. . .enjoy exploring and asking questions. You have an excuse! Consider what life was like when you were 10 to 15 years old--a time when you were coming of age and absorbing some of your values from the influential people, peers, places, and events in your life. To help you take a look at the popular culture tramping through your life (and probably worrying your parents and other adults), check out this web site for a list of historic events and cultural summaries of your coming-of-age decade http://multied.com/index.html. Consider the bigger picture of where you were on America's timeline and what the adults in your life may have experienced as they watched you mature in that era. Sorry. . .the site is more effective for some decades than others :(

Blessings on your week,
Deborah
